Dr. Eugene Choi’s Mesothelioma Treatment Approach

Dr. Choi typically uses a combination of surgery and chemotherapy known as cytoreduction with HIPEC to treat peritoneal mesothelioma in veterans.

This is considered the gold standard for treating peritoneal mesothelioma, and patients who undergo this treatment can often become long-term survivors, especially if their surgeon can remove all of the cancer.

“As a surgeon, especially for peritoneal mesothelioma, I have to ask two questions for myself. One, how much disease does the patient have, and two, can I get it all out?”

— Dr. Eugene Choi, peritoneal mesothelioma doctor

Dr. Choi also collaborates closely with other oncologists on staff who can administer other mesothelioma treatments like chemotherapy and radiation to help veterans.

This is very important as many patients require a multimodal treatment plan in which more than one therapy is used for best results.

For example, some patients who are more frail or who have advanced disease may need chemotherapy to shrink cancer tumors before surgery is attempted. Or, chemotherapy can be used after Dr. Choi operates to kill microscopic cancer cells left behind.

Dr. Eugene Choi’s Medical Background

Dr. Choi has over 20 years of experience in helping patients with peritoneal mesothelioma and other gastrointestinal ailments.

He earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in 1997 before completing several residencies and fellowships at:

  • University of Chicago
  • University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine
  • University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center

Dr. Choi currently treats civilians at Baylor College of Medicine and veterans at Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. These facilities are located across the street from each other in Houston. He has been splitting his time between both locations since 2019.

Besides his work as a cancer surgeon, Dr. Choi is also an Associate Professor of Surgery at Baylor, where he helps teach the next generation of mesothelioma doctors.

Dr. Eugene Choi’s Work With Other Mesothelioma Doctors

Dr. Choi first began treating peritoneal mesothelioma at the University of Chicago under the direction of Dr. Hedy Lee Kindler, a top mesothelioma surgeon.

He also collaborated closely with the late Dr. David Sugarbaker — world-renowned for his treatment of pleural mesothelioma (which forms in the lung lining) — when he first arrived at Baylor.

While Dr. Sugarbaker treated pleural mesothelioma, he and Dr. Choi would work together if a patient’s cancer was in the linings of both the abdomen and lungs (bicavitary disease).

Today, Dr. Choi treats mesothelioma with an entire team of other health care providers at his side, ensuring patients get the best care.

“As a member of a multidisciplinary cancer care team, Dr. Choi works closely with other skilled specialists from medical and radiation oncology to offer the most complete care possible.”
